Natalee Holloway, is suing The National Enquirer , charging that the tabloid published knowingly false stories about her daughter's 2005 disappearance in Aruba in order to profit from the tragedy.
Holloway's lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala., accuses the magazine and its publisher, American Media Inc., of printing "false headlines, articles and statements" for nearly seven years, the Associated Press reports.
"They keep on doing it," says Lin Wood, the attorney for Beth Holloway . "We had no choice but to file this lawsuit." No damage figure was mentioned in the suit.
The 18-year-old high school senior disappeared during a graduation trip to Aruba.
She was last seen leaving a bar the morning of May 30, 2005, with Joran van der Sloot, a Dutchman who was raised in Aruba. Her body was never found.
Van der Sloot, who has been charged in Alabama with trying to extort money from the Holloway family, pleaded guilty in January to killing a Peruvian college student he met in Lima.
The lawsuit mentions several Enquirer articles, including one that claims Van der Sloot had a "secret hand-drawn" map to Holloway's grave.
The lawsuit also claims the magazine knew statements used in stories were false when they were published.
The AP says calls to American Media Inc., which is based in Boca Raton, Fla, were not immediately returned.
