The operator of a Green Line trolley that rear-ended another train parked at a downtown station Thursday has been fired after T officials said he was inattentive and was moonlighting the night before.
T officials announced today the driver violated fitness for duty in the Boylston Station crash. They refused to identify the driver saying it was not relevant.
The crash caused $500,000 in damages and injured 37 people.
MBTA acting General Manager Jonathan Davis said the driver was moonlighting the night before on a midnight-to-8 a.m. shift. The driver then began his MBTA shift at 11 a.m.
The Green Line crash was the first run of his day, Davis said. That crash occurred at 11:28 a.m.
Davis would not divulge the job the driver was working at the night before. He also would not say if the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
He certainly violated fitness for duty and attentiveness to his job in making sure our passengers and employees were safe on the system, Davis said at a press conference today. It s clear that this individual did not have a sufficient rest period before operating a Green Line passenger trolley.
As the Herald reported last week, the driver had been cited by the MBTA for a speeding violation in 2009, according to the T. The citation, for running a C branch trolley 13 mph over the speed limit along Beacon Street in Brookline, was the only prior issue concerning train operation in the man s six-year career at the T, officials said.
